Gem Lakes Recreation Association Board of Directors
March 12, 2005 Meeting Minutes
The Gem Lakes Recreation Association Board of Directors met on the morning of Saturday, March 12, 8:00 a.m. at the home of Dennis Saylor.
Present:
Gary Bunker, Scott Flickinger, John Kilgo, Gary Marozas, Vicki Murray, Dennis Saylor, and Johnny Spears.
Minutes:
The minutes from the January board meeting were approved with minor corrections.
TreasurerÕs Report:
Ed SeufertÕs summary report for May 1, 2004 through March 8, 2005 was distributed. Currently, the association has $37,936 cash on hand. Expenses in February totaled $2,614, with the lime being the single largest item at $938.
Recreation ManagerÕs Report:
Johnny Spears reported that
the benches were moved, a gas week eater was obtained, and the doorknob on the
womenÕs restroom was partially vandalized. The power source location for the new gate and whether or
note the gate will be operated remotely or with a keypad was discussed. Spears has the cover for the lake
standpipe and Dennis Saylor offered to help him install it if needed. The board discussed the new signs with
the intention of keeping them both visible and simple while conforming to DHEC
requirements. Spears will work on
the sign wording and obtain an estimate.
The proposal to purchase watercraft (paddleboats, canoes, kayaks, etc.)
will be tabled until after the board election in April. Johnny Spears will continue his efforts
to obtain lifeguards for the summer swimming season. He will also come up with a list of workday projects,
including improvements to the lifeguard stand.
Updates and Status Reports:
Lake Valve: Buddy Brinkley is awaiting a bid from MettÕs in Couchton.
Pond Management: John Kilgo reported that the lower lake has been limed. The fertilizer remains in storage and will be applied when the lake temperature reaches 60 to 65 degrees. A contractor offered a weed control program utilizing herbicides and grass carp. The board decided to continue with the current program and to pursue some manual weed removal options around the swimming lake. Concerns were raised regarding the potential fish kill when the lake is lowered. Kilgo will get with Mr. King, who has made soundings around the lake and knows the underwater topography.
Gem Lakes Website: Scott Flickinger has given additional information to the contractors. Gary Marozas reported that the alias, counter, and announcement section have been added to the site. $60 was approved to pay for the transition of site maintenance from the contractor to Marozas. A rolling 12-month calendar is envisioned for the site. The e-mail for the alias is info@gemlakes.org.
Other Old Business:
The Beaver Issue: According to the County Extension there is no ŌhumaneĶ way to trap the beavers infesting the upper lake. Johnny Spears will go ahead and arrange for a contractor to trap the critters.
New Business:
Johnny Spears will water
seal the fishing docks, which will require that they be chained off for a few
hours. Scott Flickinger will begin
checking out Memorial Day picnic food costs, including Jo-JoÕs Wings. Gary Bunker was tasked with putting out
the newsletter ASAP in order to cover the Memorial Day Picnic, the Annual
Meeting, the GLOW Garage Sale, and the scheduled Work Days. It was noted that brand new soccer nets
remain in the tennis shed, and Spears and Marozas will discuss the possibility
of building new goal structures, perhaps on one of the upcoming Work Days.
Next Meeting:
The next meeting is scheduled for
Saturday, April 9, 8 a.m. at the Pavilion.
The meeting adjourned at 9:45 a.m.
