The Gem Lakes Recreation Association Board of Directors met on the morning of Saturday, July 8, 8 a.m. at the Pavilion.

Present:

Buddy Brinkley, Gary Bunker, Gary Marozas, Bill Mathison, Bob Mell, Dennis Saylor, Ed Seufert,  and Johnny Spears.

Minutes:

The minutes from the June board meeting were approved.

Treasurer’s Report:

Ed Seufert presented the preliminary numbers for the June 2006.  Receipts totaled $20,596, as dues are now coming in, while total expenses for the month were $8,562.  The largest items of expense included the recreation manager and lifeguard salaries, liability insurance, security services, and utilities.  Total financial assets for the GLRA stand at $54,750.  The itemized expenses for the Memorial Day picnic were $5,176.  Seufert reported that the workman’s compensation for the bookkeeper has increased by $45.

Recreation Manager’s Report:

Johnny Spears reported that the contractor hired to repair the Springwood walkway is having trouble finding laborers.  The board considered a suggestion to make the walkway repairs a Work Day project.  Spears is waiting on call-backs from contractors regarding the proposed French drain along the beach retaining wall.  Spears discussed the various options for the replacement lawnmower.  The board voted to allocate Spears $3,300 to replace the mower the next time it breaks down.  Spears held a meeting with the lifeguards regarding the performance of their duties.

Security Report:

Dennis Saylor reported that the signs, stickers, and cameras have been installed.

Lake Management Report:

Buddy Brinkley reported that the fishing lake is 20” higher than last month due to the addition of four boards.  The fishing lake, however, is still two feet low.  Waters Edge is now receiving water, though that lake is about a foot low.  It is estimated that one more good storm will solve the water level issues in the upper Town Creek system.  The board passed a motion to draw down the lake in the fall or winter.

Old Business:

Stair Railings – Gary Marozas will get quotes for installing a set of railings down the middle of both sets of concrete steps leading from the pavilion to the swimming lake.  Buddy Brinkley also asked that paving the area between the steps be considered.

Adding a Grill to the Pavilion – Bob Mell presented various grill alternatives.  The board passed a motion to purchase one additional grill.

Extra Picnic Areas – Dennis Saylor discussed the concept of placing another picnic area near the swimming lake fishing dock with a grill and a picnic table on a concrete pad.

New Business:

Buddy Brinkley bought a new megaphone to replace the stolen one and the board voted to reimburse him.  The new megaphone will be stored in the lifeguard shack.  The missing megaphone story will be included in the next newsletter.  Johnny Spears discussed alternatives for new basketball goals.  The board also deferred a decision on a new irrigation pump, preferring instead to pressure test the existing system before purchasing a new pump.

Information Items:

The board decided that the first “Movie Nights” will be held on Friday, July 28 and Saturday, July 29.  Bob Mell will help provide the screen.  Buddy Brinkley announced that the Disney classic “The Song of the South” would be the first film to be screened.  Proposals for bingo nights and a day camp were briefly discussed.  The board passed a motion to support Dennis Saylor’s proposal to use funds authorized for additional lighting to instead put some of the existing lights on motion sensors.

Next Meeting:

The next meeting will be held at the Pavilion on August 19, 2006 at 8:00 a.m.

The meeting adjourned at 9:40 a.m.
