April 14, 2007 Meeting Minutes

 

 

The Gem Lakes Recreation Association Board of Directors met on the morning of Saturday, April 14, 2007, 8:05 a.m. at the home of Gary Marozas.

 

Present:

 

Buddy Brinkley, Gary Bunker, Gary Marozas, Bill Mathison, Bob Mell, Vickie Murray, Dennis Saylor, Ed Seufert, and Johnny Spears.

 

Minutes:

 

The minutes from the March board meeting were approved. 

 

Treasurer’s Report:

 

Treasurer Ed Seufert distributed the preliminary February statements.  Receipts in March totaled $268 while total expenses for the month were $3,092.  The largest item of expense was $2,043 for insurance.  The total financial assets of the GLRA stand at $29,299.  $5,000 was transferred from the money market account to the checking account in March.

 

The board discussed the draft 2007-2008 budget presented by Seufert.  He will make the requested changes in time for the Annual Meeting.  Seufert will deliver the overdue account information to Buddy Brinkley for collection.  The dues invoices for the coming year will go out on May 1.

 

Recreation Manager’s Report:

 

Johnny Spears reported that reservations for the pavilion are picking up with the warmer weather.  Spears noted the need for weatherproofing on the docks and repairs for some sprinkler heads.  The City of Aiken recently repaired a sewer back-up problem on the association grounds.  A giant snapping turtle was reported lurking around the lakes.

 

Security Report:

 

Buddy Brinkley discussed the key situation.  Two sets of keys have been created.  Key #1 will unlock the gate and the bathrooms.  Key #2 will unlock the storage shed, the lifeguard shed, the gate to the old sewage treatment facilities, and other sensitive areas.  The tennis court will continue to utilize the combination lock.  The board passed a motion establishing a new key control list under the supervision of Johnny Spears.

   

Lake Management Report: 

 

Buddy Brinkley reported that the lakes are full and the waterfront residents are happy.

 

Old Business:

 

2nd Grill for the Pavilion – This item has been purchased.

 

Extension of Steps from the Beach to the Pavilion – Gary Marozas reported that the forms are to be removed today (April 14).  He distributed pictures of the completed work and stated that the tripping hazards will be addressed - especially at the interface between the dirt road and the walkway.

 

New Business:

 

Annual Meeting Preparation – The GLRA Annual Meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on April 23 at the pavilion.  The seats held by Gary Marozas, Dennis Saylor, Gary Bunker, and Vickie Murray will be up for a vote. 

 

Memorial Day Preparation – The Memorial Day Picnic will be held on Saturday, May 26.  The board discussed game and prize ideas.  Buddy Brinkley will arrange for a diver to inspect the swimming area prior to the picnic and the opening of the beach.

 

Newsletter – Gary Bunker reported that the newsletters were mailed on April 13.

 

Beach Sand - The board passed a motion allocating $1,000 for the purchase and spreading of sand for the swimming area.

 

Investment in CDs - Ed Seufert will continue to investigate investment options.  Interest rates for CDs are currently very low.

 

Grass Cutting Schedule - The board passed a motion setting the grass-cutting schedule at once every three weeks.  The Recreation Manager may exceed this limitation if an outstanding situation exists, but the board must be notified.

The next meeting will be held at the pavilion on Saturday, May 12 at 8:00 a.m.
